Some of you may remember Hugo Barra left Google last year to work over in China and undertake a job for Xiaomi. Hugo has just announced on his Google+ Xiami has a new Redmi smartphone. The Redmi line is a rebranding of their Hongmi products, for other global markets other than China. The price for the Redmi device is $130 and it has pretty good specifications for that price.
The Redmi will have a 4.7-inch IPS 720p display, 1.5GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of on-board storage with a microSD card slot, 8MP back camera which is capable of recording 1080p video, coupled with a 1.3MP front-facing camera. It also runs MIUI v5 on-board, which is common for manufacturers in China to put on their devices instead their own custom skin or some stock Android model.
According to Xiaomi, the Redmi will be debuting in Singapore. Currently and availability for other markets is unknown, but if Xiaomi wants to succeed with the Redmi, then they are going to need to push this device in more markets. There is currently no information regarding warrantees, updates and after care support from Xiaomi.
This phone is going to be a competitor to the Moto G, the specs are almost the same, apart from the camera.
Maybe we will see Xiaomi come into the US market and try to compete with Motorola and others manufactures for the budget end of the market.
